A great result for West Brom last night as they won 2-0 and both of their rivals for promotion were beaten. Newcastle suffered their first defeat since October going down 3-0 at Derby County.

My two picks at the start were Newcastle and West Brom and they have not disappointed me. The Championship is one of the most competitive leagues in Europe and is also the 4th highest in terms of crowd attendances.

Only beaten by the Premier League, La Liga and the Bundesliga……it even beat Serie A. This is a testament to the quality of our second league. But having said that you only have to look at how these sides shape up against our top sides in the cups.

On any given day they can match them in a one off game. How many teams in Europe could get 44,000 home attendances like Newcastle do without even being in the top division?

Even clubs like Sheffield Wednesday are massive compared to where they are in the league and look at Leeds United who are getting crowds of 25,000 and 30,000 in the third tier. So English football is very strong, its just a shame that so many of our clubs are in such a financial mess.

But the players are on crazy money relative to what they do. Of course the reason why they are on that kind of money to begin with is down to the effect that they have on the business. So much money is being pumped into football that clubs need success on the pitch and to get that they have to get the best players.

This process can do nothing else but hike the levels of salaries. But where can it all end? With top Premier League players being on basic salaries of 150k/week then the millions that are being drained from the clubs just in salaries is scary.

The only winners to come out of this are the footballers who are overpaid and swan around thinking that they are film stars because the fans treat them as such.

See you soon
