The womens singles at the Australian Open in Melbourne have now reached the critical semi-final stage and each of the four remaining players will all feel that they have a great chance of taking home the title. Maria Sharapova and Petra Kvitova bothed reached the semi-finals which is highly significant because both of them can take over the world number one position with victory in this tournament.

Caroline Wozniacki was surprisingly eliminated from the event in the quarter-finals and she looks favourite now to lose her number one world ranking. However Victoria Azarenka can also take the world number one spot and she plays Kim Clijsters in the other semi-final on Thursday.

It would not be a surprise though to see Maria Sharapova emerge a winner here in Melbourne. She has clearly shown the mental fortitude to bounce back to the top after winning slams in the past and twice having the world number one spot with the latest time being as long ago as 2008 when she held top spot for just three weeks. That was nearly four years ago and four years is an absolute age in tennis these days. So it is difficult to predict a winner in both the mens and womens singles but what a great line up we have in both the mens and womens semi-finals this year.
