The first slam event of the year

Tennis | 15-01-12

All of the big names in tennis are in Melbourne for the start of the Australian Open which is the first slam event of the year. A players career and standing in the game are measured in how many slams they have won and no one has won more than Roger Federer in the history of the game. But there are interesting issues going into this tournament because it is rather unclear as to who the winner will be.

Both Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic have gone through spells with their respective injuries and so it will be interesting to see how they hold up during the heat of a grand slam event. This could even pave the way for another victory for an in form Roger Federer who had a great year in ATP events even though he didn't win a slam.

It would not be surprising to see Federer triumph here in Melbourne but there are increasing rumours that this could be Andy Murray's year to finally land a slam. He is now working with new coach Ivan Lendl on his mental toughness and he will need it because he has clearly wilted under the pressure of playing in a slam final. He has reached three to date and the set score is 0-9 against him. But he clearly has the talent to win a big event and if he can get the mind set right then it would be a brave man to back against him.
