Is it me or is the Premier League like some soap opera? Yesterday was one of the most fascinating days for ages and Mark Hughes as expected got the sack from Manchester City.
I don’t feel sorry for him, in fact why should anyone feel sorry for him. I said ages ago that I didn’t feel that he was the right man for the job. He didn’t have the experience of guiding a team to where City are trying to be.
Some people say that Mancini is a risk but 3 Serie A titles is a damn site more than what Hughes has ever done. Mark Hughes was lucky to get that job because he was the choice of the previous owners.
He has had eighteen months in the job and has spent around £250 million. Some people have said that he couldn’t have done any more having reached the Carling Cup semi-finals and is 6th in the league with only two defeats (fewest in the league).
The owners are looking at it though from another angle. People forget that these are seriously smart business people, they don’t make business decisions of this magnitude without having thought it through and taken professional advice.
They felt that the performances (not the results) were the reason when you read and digest yesterdays statement. The performances by City have been erratic and defensively they have been a shambles. Even yesterday, their 4-3 win over Sunderland was fortunate and they conceded three goals for the second time in a few days.
But Hughes will get a nice pay off and he will be a commodity that is for sure. Having managed Blackburn, Wales and now Man City and done quite well in all of those jobs then he will not be short of job offers. It seemed obvious yesterday that Hughes was on limited time and the press often have contacts in these areas that could teach MI5 a thing or two.
When he waved to the crowd at the end of the game yesterday and then there was no press conference at the end despite the team winning then the writing was on the wall. How will Mancini do? I think he will do better than Hughes but once again it will take time but he does have the time to make City top four……personally this makes it even worse for Liverpool in my opinion and Rafa’s now famous “guarantee”……..oh I do love it
see you soon
Carl
