Players taking St Andrews apart

Golf | 16-07-10
Makes a nice change not to be talking about the World Cup anymore and there was me looking forward to it for so long. But The Open Golf Championship started yesterday and Rory Mcllroy hit an absolute superb round 0f 63 to equal the lowest round ever at a major. In fact the scoring was so low that Tiger Woods commented on how crazy it was to have to make -5 just to be in the top 10. I have a sneaking feeling though that it will not last. A combination of tougher pin positions and worse weather could lead to higher scores either today or tomorrow. Either that or we could have an Open Champion come Sunday evening on -20 or more which would be literally unthinkable. Tiger Woods said that the players "took the course apart" and I think that he was right. But I have seen enough Open Championships over the years and days like these have been known before. I have also known other extremes as well where only one or two players broke par on a given day. This sort of reminds of past US Opens where a par score after 72 holes was considered a great score and even a potential tournament winning score. But Tiger Woods once called Rory Mcllroy the "real deal" and it is not too difficult to see why on yesterdays showing. But we all know what this young kid can do and even though it is often said that it is only a matter of time before some young starlet breaks through, I think that in this case it is true. It will he interesting to see how he handles the pressure of being leader over the next few hours.
