Who actually makes money betting on sports?

Other Sports | 29-06-11
To really make money as a sports bettor requires discipline and dedication…….or the willingness not to bet very often. This weekend’s big fight between Haye and Klitschko intrigues me but even though I want David Haye to win, I think he is the inferior fighter and I don’t expect him to have it as easy as he did against Valuev. Although I am struggling to see value in the fight and so in circumstances like these then I do what all good sports bettors do……I swerve having a bet. Other and more wiser boxing heads than mine may find that value but if you cannot have a good enough reason for betting then you are simply gambling with a negative expectation. The last time that I did that I lost £500 (around $900 at the time) when Amir Khan won one of his first big fights…….a fight that I didn’t expect him to win! But I made the mistake of listening to experts but it doesn’t matter what expert you listen to, they are not privy to what goes on in these fights and if you read their opinion in newspapers and such then they are paid to have opinions on certain events. So to answer the question that is in the title then many people make money betting on sports and it is easier now than what it used to be as there is far more choice when it comes to sports betting with many more sporting events being bet on and more room to find value. Although to find that value then you really need to know a sport very well but you also need to understand the sport also.
