Did Jenson Button deserve the title?

Motor Sport | 31-10-09
I am getting a little annoyed by some of the comments that have been flying around about Jenson Button lately and I am sure that most of them are down to jealousy. Saying that he didn't deserve the title is silly and saying things like he won't win another title and he isn't as good as Schumacher are comments that I find staggering to be quite frank. Firstly let us discuss the topic of world titles indicating who the best drivers were. In my mind, you cannot say that the driver with the most world titles was the best driver in history......he could have been and having so many world titles would put you in contention but this cannot be the sole deciding factor. There are so many variables that contest who the greatest is or was in any particular sport. For example, motivational factors come into play. Someone for instance could actually peak emotionally and psychologically after winning their first world title. They have fulfilled their lifelong ambition and now they cannot lift themselves mentally to those same highs again. So someone with 1 world title in a sport could be a more talented individual than someone with six or seven. Also the level of competition is a factor as well, then we look at financial incentives or the level of personal ambition that fuels certain individuals. With Formula 1 then the ability of the back up team and the financial resources of those teams come into play. So at different points in time, factors can come together that mean that a certain driver at a certain point in history wins numerous world titles.....but does that make them the best? Jenson Button is a worthy world champion for one simple reason, he has more points and more race wins than any other driver that is competing for the world title in this present season......so how can anyone say that he doesn't deserve it? My advice to these people is to accept it and then move on....good on you Jenson :-) rant over :-) Carl
