Missed out yesterday

11:33 Europe/London November 22, 2009 by Carl

I was seriously contemplating betting on the Rugby yesterday which isn’t something that I generally do. But Scotland’s amazing 9-8 win over Australia may just go down as the result of the year.

The fact that the Aussies deserved to win and their final kick could have been converted by a club player made no difference…..they lost. But its OK being wise after. I also missed out on New Zealand who beat England 19-6 at Twickenham.

This was as close to buying money against a side who are in as much mess as England as it is possible to get. However the bookies also knew this and the price was too low for me to be able to stomach and the sweat wouldn’t have been worth it when the score was 6-6 :-)

But I can live with those misses but I almost lumped a wedge on Lee Westwood to win the Dubai World Championship this week and guess who has a six shot lead with twelve holes to play as I sit here typing this post :-(

I tend not to like golf betting because you can go long periods without winning and that doesn’t suit my psyche…..I much prefer little and often and probably why I prefer cash games at poker to poker tournaments.

But the big news this week apart from Thierry Henry’s “hand of god” incident was Michael Schumacher being on the verge of a return to F1 with Jenson Button moving to join Lewis Hamilton. This could signal one of the most eagerly awaited seasons in F1 there has ever been.

It has to be serious when even I cannot wait for the new season to start. For sure, Formula 1 betting levels will be higher than last season if Schumacher returns and the interest globally will sky rocket.

I did manage however to lay Aston Villa away at Burnley, the lads at Turf Moor are almost like Stoke City were last season. They are making their home fixtures very difficult for the opposition. A record of 5-1-1 tells its won story.

see you soon

Did Jenson Button deserve the title?

12:45 Europe/London October 31, 2009 by Carl

I am getting a little annoyed by some of the comments that have been flying around about Jenson Button lately and I am sure that most of them are down to jealousy. Saying that he didn’t deserve the title is silly and saying things like he won’t win another title and he isn’t as good as Schumacher are comments that I find staggering to be quite frank.

Firstly let us discuss the topic of world titles indicating who the best drivers were. In my mind, you cannot say that the driver with the most world titles was the best driver in history……he could have been and having so many world titles would put you in contention but this cannot be the sole deciding factor.

There are so many variables that contest who the greatest is or was in any particular sport. For example, motivational factors come into play. Someone for instance could actually peak emotionally and psychologically after winning their first world title. They have fulfilled their lifelong ambition and now they cannot lift themselves mentally to those same highs again. So someone with 1 world title in a sport could be a more talented individual than someone with six or seven.

Also the level of competition is a factor as well, then we look at financial incentives or the level of personal ambition that fuels certain individuals. With Formula 1 then the ability of the back up team and the financial resources of those teams come into play. So at different points in time, factors can come together that mean that a certain driver at a certain point in history wins numerous world titles…..but does that make them the best?

Jenson Button is a worthy world champion for one simple reason, he has more points and more race wins than any other driver that is competing for the world title in this present season……so how can anyone say that he doesn’t deserve it? My advice to these people is to accept it and then move on….good on you Jenson :-)

rant over :-)
