So Sunday's World Cup Final at Soccer City will feature two teams who have never previously won the World Cup before. The last time that this happened was in 1978 when Argentina played Holland.
I watched last nights game between Germany and Spain and Germany were simply outclassed and the 1-0 scoreline barely did the Spaniards justice. Germany were hanging on in the second half but the header from Puyol was a gem.
You always know with Spain that they will dominate possession and they are my selection now to win Sunday's final. The problem with Spain though is that they try to be too intricate at times and try to make that one pass too many. It was no surprise that after all their possession last night that the goal should come from a corner and a header.
I am not sure about this final having the two best teams but Spain could become the first team ever to win the World Cup after losing their opening game and Spain lost to Switzerland. But even when Spain look toothless up front, they keep the ball so well that they are difficult to beat simply because the opposing team sees so little of the ball.
So even when people like Torres and Villa do not perform well up front, Spain are still very difficult to beat. I can never see the point of the 3rd and 4th place play-off and it must be the game that no team wants to play in.
I will take Germany to beat Uruguay but it really depends on how "up for it" each team can get. I thought for a while last night when the score was 0-0 after 70 minutes that Germany may perform a smash and grab. I am sure there will be huge disappointment this morning in Germany but the fact remains that they have had another good World Cup yet again.
But Germany were labouring under the same handicap as England and their run to winning the World Cup was very difficult. Not easy to come through a series of games that would have been England, Argentina, Spain and Holland.
