More Wenger Woe
Football | 08-02-10
Did Arsenal ever really have any chance of winning the league? Well at the start of the season I said no. But even I was starting to utter the words "possibly" halfway through the season.
How misguided I was, this is just the same old Arsenal. They look fantastic and play spellbinding football but they are too lightweight against the big powerful sides. It is a repeating pattern and this is why they have no chance now in the league and are 9pts behind a very powerful Chelsea side who are rolling along like a juggernaut.
Even Wenger now admits the obvious, well lets face it....he has no choice now. Although he is smart enough to have always known this but hasn't said it in public. His team is approaching the stage where they are no longer able to hide behind inexperience.
Arsenal need several big players in key positions that will add firepower and steel to their side. They are not far short of being title winners, not when they can play football at a level that they do.
But they buckle against the powerful sides who know how to defend against them and powerfully and effectively hit them on the counter. Arsenal are ahead of Liverpool in my opinion as potential title challengers but until Wenger commits and makes some big signings then this barren trophy run will continue.
They have not won anything since the 2005 FA Cup and the last major trophy was the 2004 League title. The Premier League has evolved since then. Chelsea were not the powerhouse that they are now and we will soon be having Manchester City as contenders before long.
So if Wenger wants to win another title then he has to act. Whether he will or not is a different matter. His problem now is that he has built the team in such a way that finding the players who will fit into that style will not be straight forward.
