An interesting night of football

Football | 26-01-11
Arsenal are now only one step away from ending their trophy drought when they overcame their 1-0 first leg deficit by beating Ipswich Town 3-0 last night in the League Cup semi final. A game they dominated from the start and that was to be expected really but they created few clear cut chances in the first half despite their huge advantage in possession. It wasn’t until the 61st minute that they took the lead and what a wonderful goal it was. It means that they will play the winner of West Ham and Birmingham in the final next month and they will start favourites. But for me the game of the night was at Bloomfield Road where Blackpool surrendered a 2-0 lead against Manchester United to lose 3-2. The Reds were on the brink of losing their unbeaten run but this is what Champions are made of. Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City will have been stunned by last nights fight back. But it also highlights how Blackpool cannot take £4 million for Charlie Adam. He is pivotal to their chances of staying in the Premier League and when it is touted that staying in the Premier League is worth £65 million a season then Blackpool would be crazy to sell him now unless a club pays crazy money. We are almost at the end of January and Blackpool have 28pts and are 6pts clear of the drop with a great chance of staying up. Losing Adam now when they could sell him for at least that amount in the summer even when they stay up simply does not make sense. The fact of the matter is that Adam has far more value to Blackpool than he does to any other club at this time and he still has 2yrs on his contract and Blackpool are wise to hold him to that.
