What is wrong with the England one day side?
Cricket | 28-03-11
I laid England at the start of the 2011 Cricket World cup and despite a couple of scares along the way my money was as safe as houses after their mauling to Sri Lanka in the quarter final in Colombo. I think that primarily there were three key problems in this tournament for England. The first one was the length of time that they have been away from home. This and only this could have resulted in defeats to Ireland and Bangladesh and a close shave against Holland.
I was getting a little sick and tired of hearing rhetoric coming from the England captain and everyone else. A second problem for me is that England do not have enough quality one day players to win the World Cup. This tournament isn’t about grinding out test match wins which they have proved they can do with their Ashes victory. This is about raw cricket talent that needs to show itself very quickly and effectively in a one day game.
Better to have a player who can give you 100 and 0 than someone with 30 and 25. Also injuries to a few key players have rocked England as well but I feel that this was nothing compared to the morale in the camp from playing too much cricket. For me the writing was on the wall in the one day series where England lost 6-1 to Australia. England’s form has been totally inconsistent in this tournament with wins against Holland and the West Indies neither of which were likely to win the event. I thought the win over South Africa was lucky and the draw versus India papered over the cracks of what was wrong. So at 8/1 then I thought that England were a great lay….more like 25/1 in my mind.
