The best two teams in the final
Cricket | 01-04-11
When India play Sri Lanka tomorrow in the 2011 Cricket World Cup final then I cannot possibly lose and that is a great feeling. I tipped that the winner would come from these two teams at the start and here they are in the final. I didn’t feel that sides like Australia, Pakistan and South Africa were quite strong enough to go all the way. England were suffering from fatigue and also they lack real world class one day players in my opinion. Other teams like New Zealand and the West Indies didn’t seem strong enough either even though the Kiwi’s did great to reach the last four.
It seems a shame that the final will afford home advantage to India as this makes them favourites. But after three successive Australia victories in this competition then it is about time that the trophy had a new name on it. One of these great sides will win it for the second time after Sri Lanka won it in 1996 and India in 1983. But the batting line up for India is hugely important to them and I see them edging out Sri Lanka in a close final which will be fitting for the competition.
There have been some upsets as there always are but I think that the final will present a fitting climax to what has been a far better competition than last time. The format is different now and the last tournament simply went on for far too long with the Super Eights. Knockout stages do not always mean that the best team wins but that is offset by the excitement levels being higher.
