6. Derek McGovern on Sports Betting

Author……………………….Derek McGovern

Published………………….1999

Publishing Com………..Rowton Press

Derek McGovern has long since been regarded as one of the UK’s premier sports betting experts. He has written for the tabloid newspapers now for a good few years and is a regular face on Channel 4.

But here we are looking at his book from 1999 on sports betting and how to make it pay. I first read this book some years ago and I haven’t read it for ages so I would need to re-read the book to give a really honest assessment.

There is no doubt that any sports betting book that was written pre-betting exchange era is lacking although that isn’t any fault of the book or the author. McGovern covers many areas in that book including poker although the poker section leaves a lot to be desired and is certainly not recommended reading for any player who is serious about making money.

But any book that has been written with someone with the sports betting wisdom of Derek McGovern is certain to be a very interesting read at the very least.

Whether he is talking about Cricket, Rugby, Football, Boxing or whatever….McGovern gets right to the heart of what is important in modern sports betting. The concept of finding value prices is something that Mark Coton covered in his book some years earlier but this just underlines that value is everything in sport.

Some of the tactics that McGovern speaks of in this book are more than likely out of date now but yet a second hand used copy from Amazon shouldn’t really cost all that much.

Once again I have to say that while this book wouldn’t be at the top of books that I recommend, it still is worth a read and the novice punter will pick up loads of valuable punting tips and advice.
