Here in part three of my book review section I want to take a look at one of the most underrated books of the past few years.
3. Betting to Win
Author…………………….Leighton Vaughan Phillips
Published………………..2002
Publishing Com………Highstakes
The Highstakes company in England generally produce some decent material and this book is no exception. This book taught me some very valuable things about punter psychology which I think are pivotal to making money in sports betting.
I cannot give the book maximum marks as it covers areas in sparse detail that need fuller coverage. But the book draws on academic research in many areas that is invaluable to sports betting.
The book covers many areas although if I have one criticism and that is that it possibly covers too much. Areas like spread betting are looked at as are betting exchanges.
This guy is a Professor of Economics and Finance and was head of the Betting Research Unit at the Trent University in Nottingham. I think that as we head into a whole new era of bookmaker and odds compiler accuracy then having this kind of intellect behind a book of this nature is a great start.
I personally found some of the areas of this book so good and insightful that I am not prepared to divulge what they are…….sorry about that but I just don’t want vast armies of people going into areas where I operate.
I think that this book is worthy of a read by any serious sports betting fan and even professionals would glean information from this book. The book is slightly out of date now and areas like finding arbs have been almost eliminated or at the least it is getting far more difficult to find them in the seven years or so since this book was first written.
But it is still a worthwhile book and if you have an account with Amazon then you will certainly be able to pick up a used copy.
RATING………..8.5/10
Hope you are enjoying your Christmas and see you soon
